InandaSome 24 kilometres from Durban, along a road which climbs
steeply into the high hills, lies the small
administrative, magisterial and
trading centre of Inanda ('the pleasant place'). The road
passes through an area
densely inhabited by African people and ends at one of the
most magnificent
viewing sites in Africa, with a panorama of the Valley of
a Thousand Hills.
Along the way lie the Ohlange and
Ghandi Institutes.
Near Inanda, reached by a less challenging 18-kilometre
road from Verulam, is
the 550-hectare Inanda Game Park, at an altitude of 460
metres on the edge of
the Valley of a Thousand Hills. The park is well stocked
with game, and there
are five rest camps. Bird life includes the crowned and
martial eagles, Knysna
and purple-crested loeries, and Narina trogon. There are
wilderness trails.
